Sickle Cell Awareness PDF Print E-mail
September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Sickle Cell Kids is a great new Website, created by Emory University's Georgia Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center, designed to help children aged 5 to 13 learn more about Sickle Cell Anemia. The site requires the free Adobe Flash Player 5, and even though the site opens with a registration page, you may access the site without filling anything out just by clicking the "submit" button.

Glossopedia PDF Print E-mail
Introducing Glossopedia, an online encyclopedia for children ages 7 to 12. This encyclopedia doesn't have the range of articles that the Alabama Virtual Library's Encyclopedia Britannica Online Student Edition provides, but it does have good articles with lots of photos, and the icons used to navigate the pages will help visual learners.
An added bonus for Library patrons, Glossopedia has partnered with the magazine Ranger Rick (look for the latest edition on the magazine rack beside Ms. Maria's desk in the Children's room) to offer more online information related to specific articles in the print magazine!

World Data Available on AVL PDF Print E-mail
What is the average household size in Japan? What is the major export of Norway? Use Britannica's World Data tool (available through the Alabama Virtual Library) to answer these questions and expand your understanding of the world.

World Data Analyst allows you to create tables, charts, and even export the information to a spreadsheet for data crunching and deeper analysis. It includes easy access to statistics such as demographic, economic, health, literacy, transportation, communication, and military figures. This should be great for some of the social studies reports coming up this year.

You can always find a link to AVL by selecting the library's Research button. To find Britannica Online Public Library Edition, scroll down the alphabetical list of full-text databases that appears when you log in to AVL.
