The state of Alabama now only accepts unemployment compensation claims online or by telephone (toll-free 1-866-234-5382). Unemployment Compensation in Alabama is handled by the Department of Industrial Relations. The department suggests that anyone needing to file a claim first read their Handbook for Alabama Unemployment Compensation Claimants (This is a 32-page PDF document, so it will take some time to download if you have a slow or dial-up connection to the Internet). For a general overview of the claims process, the department's Claims and Benefits FAQ is fast-loading and useful. Additional information is available at the Alabama Unemployment Compensation homepage .
