About the BALDWIN COUNTY PUBLIC TRANSIT COALITION

Stan's Meeting Summary

We start with congratulations to Yellow Cab.  They applied for license to serve ALL of Baldwin County, not just the south part.  Records of demand for their service backed up their business plan.  Other commercial interests tried to block off the competition and prevent the expanded license.  But it was clear that Yellow Cab was acting in the public interest, as well as their own.  They are an excellent company and they are an active member of our PTC.  BRATS sees them as complementary to the BRATS mission, filling in where BRATS can't deal with certain individual requirements.  So BRATS and PTC supported their application.  The Public Service Commission in Montgomery saw it our way and approved the application.  Now Baldwin County is better served by transportation availability.  If you need Yellow Cab their number is 251-948-8294.

Today was our annual meeting.  As we are still in the process of incorporation we stayed steady on course and reelected all officers and directors to a one year extension of their present offices.  In addition, Dr. Phil Norris was elected Director (At Large).  Congratulations, everybody!  Now don't forget, if you hold office, to sign the incorporation document.  That has to be done before we can file.  See Connie.

Meetings are happening everywhere.  On Monday I joined a community group that met with Jon Hand, Field Representative for Congressman Jo Bonner.  That was an opportunity to press home the point that ever-tightening Federal Restrictions on community based transit are out of step with burgeoning public interest in transit development.  On the 14th Rosie and I will discuss transit development at the regular meeting of the AARP.  On the 15th several of us will meet with counterparts elsewhere in the state to initiate planning for our legislative breakfast to be held in Montgomery regarding plans to create intra-city transit in that town.  Such a system could serve as a model for other Baldwin County municipalities.

Meanwhile, the Envision Coastal Alabama "E-Teams" are keeping us busy.  There will be a general E-Team meeting at Brookley on the 23rd, followed by a planning meeting for next spring's transportation summit at the Mobile Chamber offices on the 28th.  The Transportation Summit grows bigger every time we think about it.  We expect state-wide participation for this April eventFriday evening and all day Saturday-including an address by Senator Shelby.  Are we catching fire, or what?  Call Lisa Kennedy  (251-968-1121) or me if you want to know how to get on on the action.

Don't miss the next fun-filled regular PTC meeting.  Baldwin EMC offices, Summerdale 2:00 pm, 12 November.  BE THERE!  We're taking names.

Best wishes, Stan

Stan Virden, Director (Communication)
